Dear Colleagues and Friends,
It is with great pleasure that we invite you to participate at the 12th European Congress for Paediatric Anaesthesiology being held in Porto 22–24 October 2020. The primary aim of this meeting is to bring together the paediatric anaesthesia community to build networks, to share expertise and to discuss up-to-date knowledge of paediatric perioperative care. Our event is co-organized with the Portuguese Society of Anesthesiology – Pediatric Section and will take place at the Alfändega Porto Congress Center, a beautiful old building which formerly served as a fishmarket alongside the Douro River. The city center is just a few minutes walk away from the venue and, therefore, can easily be explored on foot under the warm late October sun of Porto.
The general theme of the meeting is “Challenging the Unknowns” which reflects the many unanswered questions we are repeatedly facing in our everyday clinical practice in paediatric anaesthesia. In line, the scientific program is tailored to revisit existing myths and to tackle future challenges of our specialty. The keynote speaker of the Annual Meeting will be Prof. Markus Weiss fron Zurich, Switzerland. Prof. Weiss is a leading figure of the European paediatric anaesthesia community and the founder of the SafeTots Initiative. In his talk, he will give his personal view on the future of paediatric anaesthesia. We will also have scientific sessions devoted to perioperative management of neonates, new guidelines and recommendations in paediatric anaesthesia, as well as updates on perioperative monitoring and sedation. Of course, we will not forget the “My worst nightmare” session which has been the most animated and interactive part of our meeting over the past few years. Importantly, we also encourage you to submit an Abstract since one must never forget that information and knowledge gained from these short and as yet unpublished reports gives us cutting edge information on currently ongoing academic activities in our specialty. We will continue with paper-posters because of the very positive comments.
One particularly appreciated side of our annual meetings is that it brings together specialists involved in paediatric perioperative care from all over the World. Informal discussions around a pint of beer or a glass of wine during our past meetings have often led to long-term friendships and succesful scientific collaborations. In Porto, we aim to pursue this familiar side of our meetings by taking advantage of the famous Portuguese hospitality, culinary excellence and, of course, the Porto wine. We will end the first day of our meeting with a wine reception just in front of our Conference Center at the Douro Riverside facing the Porto wine cellars on the other side of the river. The next day, the ESPA Conference Dinner will be held in a famous Porto wine cellar – an experience not to be missed!
Please do not forget to regularly check our website for information and updates on this exciting event.
We are looking forward meeting you in Porto!
